What we do

## Fencing done properly — the first time.

What it is

Fencing covers supply and installation of new garden and boundary fences, replacement of storm-damaged runs, concrete post and gravel board systems, closeboard and featheredge fencing built on site, panel fencing, post-and-rail, trellis toppers and matching gates — plus removal and disposal of the old fence.

Who it's for

Homeowners whose boundary has rotted at ground level or blown over in winter; new-build owners who want the developer's flimsy panels replaced with something solid; landlords and letting agents needing a secure, low-maintenance boundary; anyone re-doing a garden who wants the fence in before the patio and turf go down.

When you need it

When posts rock in the ground, when panels are bowed or split, after high winds have taken a run out, when a neighbour's fence has failed on a shared boundary, or when you're fencing a new plot and need levels and lines set before landscaping starts.

Why a specialist matters

Nearly every failed fence in Berkshire failed in the same place — the post, at ground level. Timber posts set in soil rot, and the panels bolted to them go with them. Doing it once with concrete posts, concrete gravel boards and properly treated timber is the difference between a fence that lasts three winters and one that lasts twenty years.

The cost of waiting

## A fence that's leaning today is a fence that's flat on the lawn after the next storm.

### What happens if it's ignored

- A collapsing boundary fence is a security problem first — open access to the rear of the house is exactly what opportunist burglars look for.
- Rotten posts don't fail gracefully. They snap at ground level in a gust and take three or four panels, the trellis and often the neighbour's planting with them.
- If your fence falls and damages a neighbour's property, that becomes a conversation about liability — and a far more expensive job than replacing two posts.
- Pets and small children find the gaps in a failing fence long before an adult notices there's a hole.
- Untreated fence timber absorbs water, swells, splits and stains the patio, render or driveway beneath it.

### Mistakes we fix every month

- Setting timber posts straight into soil or a shallow dry-mix collar — the standard cause of failure within three to five winters.
- Skipping gravel boards, so the bottom of the panel sits in wet ground and wicks moisture up through the whole fence.
- Reusing old posts to save money on new panels — the new timber outlives the post by fifteen years and the whole run comes down again.
- Fixing panels dead level on a sloping garden, leaving triangular gaps at the bottom instead of stepping or racking the run correctly.
- Building a 2m+ fence on a front boundary or highway edge without checking planning limits, then being asked to take it down.

Our process

## A clear five-step system from first call to final handover.

1. Step 1

    ### Site Visit & Inspection

We come to you, measure up, photograph the site and listen properly to what you want from the fencing.

2. Step 2

    ### Written Quote & Diagnosis

You get an itemised, fixed-price quote within 48 hours — labour, materials, timings and what's specifically excluded.

3. Step 3

    ### Schedule & Prepare

We agree a start date, order materials in advance and protect your home — dust sheets, walkways, skip placement.

4. Step 4

    ### Build & Communicate

Daily progress updates from your dedicated foreman. No subcontractor merry-go-round — you see the same faces every day.

5. Step 5

    ### Sign-Off & Handover

Final walk-around with you, snags fixed on the spot — we don't leave until you're happy with the finish.

What you get

## Specific outcomes — not vague promises.

### Concrete posts as standard

Slotted concrete posts and gravel boards on every closeboard and panel run — nothing rots at ground level, and panels can be swapped later without digging.

### Secure boundaries

Solid, gap-free runs with properly hung gates and lockable ironmongery so the rear of the property is genuinely closed off.

### Straight lines, level tops

String lines and levels on every run. We step fences on slopes rather than leaving wedge-shaped gaps under the panels.

### Most gardens in 1–3 days

A typical 20–30m domestic boundary is a one to three day job including removal and disposal of the old fence.

### No hidden extras

The quote includes posts, gravel boards, postcrete, gates, waste removal and making good — priced in writing before we start.

### Old fence taken away

Everything old goes on the van or in the skip. Nails picked up, ground raked over, lawn left usable.

The detail

## Materials, methods and variations for fencing in Reading.

Berkshire gardens throw up three recurring fencing problems: heavy clay ground around Tadley and Thatcham that heaves and drops with the seasons, exposed rear boundaries on newer Reading and Newbury estates that catch the wind, and older properties in Caversham and Pangbourne where the boundary follows an awkward slope or an existing wall. Each needs a different post, footing and fence type — here's what we use and why.

### Materials we work with

Concrete posts and gravel boards

Our default for closeboard and panel fencing. Slotted posts hold the panel without fixings, the gravel board keeps timber clear of wet ground, and nothing rots below the surface.

Pressure-treated softwood

Tanalised UC4-rated timber for anything in ground contact, UC3 for panels, rails and featheredge boards. Cut ends re-treated on site — an untreated saw cut is a rot entry point.

Closeboard / featheredge

Built on site from arris rails and overlapping featheredge boards. The strongest domestic option, fully private, and individual boards can be replaced later.

Panel fencing

Overlap, waney-edge or heavy-duty tongue-and-groove panels for cost-effective runs with a quick installation and a uniform look.

Post-and-rail and estate fencing

For paddocks, long open boundaries and rural plots around Bucklebury and Goring where you want the boundary marked without blocking the view.

Gates and ironmongery

Made-to-measure side and double gates in matching timber, hung on galvanised or black powder-coated hinges with locking latches and drop bolts.

### Methods & techniques

Post setting

Holes dug to a minimum of 600mm — deeper for 1.8m+ and exposed runs — with postcrete or wet mix around a levelled post, haunched above ground so water sheds away.

Stepping and racking

On sloping gardens we step panels in even increments or rack a closeboard run to follow the ground, so there are no gaps under the fence.

Old fence removal

Existing posts dug or broken out rather than cut off at ground level, so new posts sit on the correct line instead of dodging old concrete.

Line setting and shared boundaries

We set out with string lines and confirm the boundary position with you before a hole is dug, and work to your side of the line unless both parties agree otherwise.

Concrete spurs and repairs

Where the fence is sound but a post has failed, we can spur the post rather than rebuild the run — a much cheaper fix where it's appropriate.

### Common variations & situations

- Closeboard fencing with concrete posts and gravel boards
- Overlap and tongue-and-groove panel fencing
- Featheredge fencing built on site to any height
- Post-and-rail and paddock fencing
- Trellis toppers and decorative screening
- Matching side gates and double driveway gates
- Storm damage repairs and single post replacement
- Front boundary fencing within permitted development height limits
- Fencing tied into new patios, driveways and retaining walls

### Residential vs commercial

Domestic fencing is judged on what you see from the kitchen window — line, level, consistent gaps and a gate that closes properly in every season. Commercial and site fencing is judged on security, height and speed across long runs. We do both, and the carpenter who quotes your garden is the one who builds it.

Common questions

## What homeowners in Reading ask before booking.

### How much does new fencing cost in Reading?

### How long does a garden fence take to install?

### Do you use concrete or timber posts?

### How high can I build a fence without planning permission?

### Whose fence is it — mine or my neighbour's?

### Can you replace just the damaged section?

### Will you take the old fence away?

### Do you fit gates as well?

### Do you guarantee the work?
